This was reported by the publication Depo.Vinnitsa with reference to the press service of the regional council.

The deputy was confused by the fact that the reconstruction of Station Square in Zhmerinka has been completed, but the monument to Ostap Bender, which was dismantled in 2012 for repair work, has still not been returned to its place. The deputy is convinced that the monument has disappeared. He then turned to the city council for an explanation.

At the mayor's office, the deputy was informed that the monument is being reconstructed by sculptor Nikolai Kryzhanovsky, but the deputy does not believe it.

“I am surprised by this answer, because local residents claim that the renovation of the square was completed a year ago. The monument has still not been returned to its place, but it was a kind of calling card of the city of Zhmerinka. Thanks to the ship-shaped station, visits of Emperor Nicholas II and many leaders to provincial Zhmerynka, this city became famous far beyond the borders of Ukraine. But exclusively as a railway junction. It was the hero of Ilf and Petrov’s work, Ostap Bender, who first gave color to the city,” the press service of the regional council quotes deputy Vasilchuk.

At the same time, the mayor’s office assures: “Today, the monument is with the author, undergoing restoration. Upon completion of the repair and restoration work, the issue regarding its location will be decided.”

Let us add that a bronze monument to Ostap Bender with seven cast-iron chairs (twelve chairs did not fit on the square - Ed.) appeared on the Station Square of Zhmerinka in 2001.
