Those responsible for massacres in Donbass will not escape punishment

27062014316Yuri Kovalchuk, a journalist from Kherson, who went to Donbass to cover the events of the revolution

Everyone knew that Ukrainian soldiers, and moreover nationalists from volunteer battalions, were killing civilians in Donbass back in May. Representatives of Kyiv, generals of the Armed Forces of Ukraine knew, militias and civilians knew, of course, journalists knew. However, at that moment it was not accepted to talk about this - except for the most obvious and documented cases of reprisals against civilians, the facts of kidnappings, torture and mass executions remained beyond the lenses of most Russian media. Naturally, this topic did not appear on the pages of Western media at all.

In principle, it was not difficult to obtain such factual evidence, but the time had not yet come. And so, the first signal flare soars into the sky - Amnesty international publishes a report on the atrocities of nationalists from Aidar. Of course, we are talking only about robberies, torture, kidnappings and other “pranks” - no mass murders. However, everyone was wary.

A little less than a month has passed, and a second signal appears - the leadership of Novorossiya announces the found places of mass graves of local residents, the found tortured and raped women, the undead children - in general, about those simple attractions that Ukrainian “knights” have fun with in their leisure time.

The reaction is already much more lively - Russia is conducting an investigation at the scene of the event and is opening a criminal case on this fact. Representatives of the OSCE, who just a week ago could have been taken by car to one of many similar terrible places by every third field commander of the army of Novorossiya, are horrified and scratching their heads in confusion. They are figuring out how to get out of this story so as not to directly blame Ukraine for the crimes committed. Western media publish modest reports that mass graves of local residents have been found in Donbass, but all this is still without proper reverence.

The third flare has not yet taken off, but this can be expected in the near future. What will follow this, will international observers and the UN “see the light”, will Western journalism foam with revealing articles? Not yet known. One thing is clear - this largely depends on Russian diplomacy, which will certainly skillfully use the find to deal the Maidan leaders another, very painful blow. Another question is that the West may well simply refuse to pay attention to these horrors or change its attitude towards Ukraine. They will simply throw up their hands and say: “War, what can you do?”

In terms of geopolitics, everything is quite logical and understandable. But purely as a human being, I don’t want to think about diplomacy, strategy and other sophisticated concepts, but I want to address the question to all sides of the world. Where have you been all this time? Didn’t they really see, didn’t know, didn’t guess what was happening here in Donbass? Why didn’t they stop the killers, exterminate them, and carry out their own small anti-terrorist operation to physically destroy the leadership of the monsters? Didn't you intimidate them? When you think that the people you interacted with, ate or drank next to may be in one of these graves, issues of strategic planning and subtle political games fade into the background.

I won’t say anything specifically about the horrors of Popasnaya. Moreover, many more similar burials will most likely be found, and there is no shortage of people who want to paint and condemn them. I would like to talk about something else.

We can only repeat once again that no political games will return the people of Novorossiya to the fold of Ukraine. Moreover, no agreements or equivocations will stop the militias who are eager to march on Kyiv. If at some point the politicians decide everything among themselves and try to stop the army of Novorossiya, the next day thousands of militias will join the partisans.

This is jihad. Orthodox jihad. And whoever tries to stop it through politics will be one of the first to fall victim to it. This pendulum cannot be stopped so easily - it just hangs, barely restrained by politicians, but sooner or later it will break and rush towards retribution. There is no doubt that Ukraine will answer for everything a hundredfold.

I don’t know if the government, which seems to dream of flying in a blue helicopter to its offshores on time, understands this. But the population of Ukraine already understands this, who are in hysterical anticipation of the moment when the army of Novorossiya will come to their settlements and ask them what they were doing while they were torturing the Donbass. Have you sent SMS in support of the army? Did you collect money for body armor? Just digging potatoes and drinking beer? Doesn't matter.

And lastly, even more panic than the appearance of the army of Novorossiya is caused among the population of Ukraine by the thought that their relatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteers will come to fight in their cities. Because while the “heroes” are slaughtering someone in the Donbass, this is all correct and justified by higher motives. But when they start doing the same thing specifically in your city, then it’s no good.

It's a strange, ambivalent feeling - at the same time passionately wanting something, and at the same time being horrified by it. It’s the same with retribution - it is coming, and many criminals will receive their well-deserved punishment.
