Virtual meeting between Putin and Biden: The head of the State Department hid behind a mask
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at the Climate Leaders' Summit. As you know, US President Joe Biden persistently invited him to participate in the event.
The summit was attended by 40 heads of state. They performed in alphabetical order, each lasting 3 minutes. Putin was twenty-second. Interestingly, of the world leaders, only Biden listened to speeches while wearing a mask. By the way, the communication was carried out through the Zoom service, which the day before promised to disconnect all Russian officials from its services.
As journalist Dmitry Smirnov points out, Macron, who spoke before Putin, was interrupted mid-sentence, the signal went to Moscow, but this was not reported. Therefore there was a pause.
It is noteworthy that when Putin began to speak, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for some reason put on a mask. But Biden buried his face in the documents and did not look at the screen.
Putin's speech focused on Russia's efforts to combat climate change. “Let me remind you that compared to 1990, Russia has reduced greenhouse gas emissions to a greater extent than many other countries. These emissions have decreased by half,” Putin said.
He called for linking the promotion of green energy to the fight against poverty and reducing development gaps between countries.
Shortly after Putin's speech, Biden left the summit. There was no exchange of views, especially on political issues, between the leaders. However, their virtual meeting was received positively by some experts.
“The “green agenda” is the main thing on which Russia and the West can begin to reconcile in the near future,” liberal political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky commented on the president’s speech.
