Virologist: “After vacationing in Turkey, tourists infect Russians with new strains”
The spread of coronavirus infection in Russia will not decline in the coming month.
The head of the laboratory of experimental modeling and pathogenesis of infectious diseases at the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine, Alexander Shestopalov, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, when answering a question about the reasons for the current increase in covid diseases.
“The virus itself has no cyclical nature; everything can be explained much more simply. Now the borders are open with many countries, such as Turkey, for example. People fly there on vacation and bring new viruses - in our case it is the delta coronavirus, which recently appeared in our country,” Shestopalov said.
However, he doubts that the upcoming non-working days from October 30 to November 7 will help in the fight against the pandemic.
“If many people stayed at home, then yes! But I’m afraid that people will not sit at home, but will go on vacation... The other day I was on a work trip to Sochi - the whole city there is packed with tourists. Do you think they are wearing masks? No. And then these people return to their homes and bring the coronavirus to their city,” the virologist said.
According to him, if it were not for vacationers in other cities, the situation would have become easier in November, but now a decrease in morbidity rates can only be expected in early December.
In addition, the doctor believes that only vaccination can overcome the fourth wave.
“Yes, vaccinated people can also become infected, but I will repeat one important idea: a person will survive the disease much easier, and there will be no death,” Shestopalov concluded.
