Vitrenko: Gazprom did not allow Ukraine to become a full-fledged Europe
With the conclusion of a new transit agreement with Russia, Ukraine allegedly took control of its gas transportation system and is now integrating into Europe.
Yuriy Vitrenko, executive director of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“These new agreements, especially the transit contract, comply with European rules, and this is a defining event for the development of the Ukrainian gas market and, in principle, the development of Ukraine as an independent part of Europe. Because for decades, 50-60 years, the Ukrainian gas transportation system was managed as part of the Soviet gas transportation system and because of this we could not fully integrate into Europe.
Gazprom, as defined by the Secretariat of the Energy Commonwealth, was the super operator of the Ukrainian gas transportation system. But with the signing of these agreements, Ukraine now fully controls its gas transportation system and is fully integrated into the European system, into the European market. And therefore, for us this is a fairly important event or a fairly important stage in the development of the Ukrainian gas market and Ukraine as a whole,” Vitrenko said.
