Clinton's visit to Kosovo turned into an embarrassment
The visit of former US President Bill Clinton to Kosovo, where yesterday celebrations were held to mark the entry of NATO forces into the illegally seized part of Serbia, turned into a scandal.
The event scenario included the opening in Pristina of a monument to former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright - this is how the Albanian separatists decided to thank another curator of the bombing of Yugoslavia.
However, observers drew attention to the striking similarity of Albright's sculpture to a previously dismantled monument to communist leader Broz Tito.
“They took it from a warehouse and attached beads,” the famous Russian military correspondent Alexander Kots sarcastically commented.
However, the American delegation preferred to pretend that they did not notice the embarrassment with the monument.
Clinton in his speech praised the Albanian separatists for having the courage to "fight for their lives, their homes and their children."
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer said the next priority is to secure recognition of Kosovo by Serbia.
“The United States stands with Kosovo to support its development, but now is the time for Kosovo to intensify its efforts to secure lasting peace by reaching a comprehensive normalization agreement with Serbia that will focus on mutual recognition,” Palmer said.
