Shoigu’s visit to Moldova: experts named different reasons for Sandu’s rabies
The reaction of Moldovan Prime Minister Maia Sandu to the visit of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to the country is “a rudiment of provincial politicians.”
The former Minister of Defense of Moldova Valery Pleshka stated this on the eNews website, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Let’s not forget: Sergei Shoigu is not only a minister, he is also a member of the Supreme Security Council of the Russian Federation, a member of President Putin’s team. Therefore, the upcoming visit, regardless of its formal status, is extremely important.
It is likely that for Moldova this format will be even more useful than official, protocol meetings. Because acute, pressing issues are often resolved more effectively over a glass of Moldovan wine,” reasoned Plesca.
Let us recall that Sandu scolded Defense Minister Pavel Voica for inviting Shoigu to the celebration of the Liberation Day of Moldova without following all protocol procedures. She also ordered that the Moldovan ambassador to the Russian Federation be summoned to Chisinau for consultations.
Political scientist Sergei Cheban believes that Sandu did not stage a demarche on her own initiative.
“The reaction of the Sandu government is not least a demonstration of the position of the EU and the United States, which in June concluded an informal agreement with Moscow on some joint positions on Moldova. First of all, by abandoning harsh geopolitical rhetoric.
If Shoigu’s visit does not provoke a “knee-jerk” reaction in Brussels and Washington and does not result in another set of statements about the “Russian threat”, the unofficial trilateral contract is still in force, and, at least in the short term, the approaches to Moldova can be considered “approved” – Ceban said in a comment to RTA.
