Although it is too early to sum up the results of the visit, however, some preliminary conclusions can be drawn now. At a joint press conference, Federal Chancellor Merkel announced that sanctions against Russia will remain in effect until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented.
Despite such decisive rhetoric, it cannot help but note that Merkel, in fact, puts the issue of Crimea “out of brackets.” Merkel also doubted that the Minsk agreements would be implemented in 2015.
Commenting on Merkel’s statements, Andrei Hunko, a member of the German Bundestag from the Left party, said: “I don’t know what Yatsenyuk and Merkel talked about behind closed doors. Apparently this visit has symbolic meaning. It is intended to support Yatsenyuk’s extremely low rating.”
He also added that Merkel's repeated statements that sanctions will be lifted after the implementation of the Minsk agreements can be interpreted in different ways. “The Ukrainian side can block the implementation of the Minsk Protocol in order to delay sanctions,” concluded Hunko.
