At the end of last week, the Ministry of Defense of Moldova held a meeting with representatives of human rights organizations, including the center for the protection of the rights of the LGBT community GenderDoc-M. They talked about combating discrimination and ensuring the principles of gender equality, the military department website reported.

The Ministry spoke about the actions it intends to take to ensure a favorable environment for military personnel in the National Army. The Ministry of Defense assured that serious attention is paid to the observance of human rights in the army, and in order for the situation in this area to become even better, they are ready to listen to the recommendations of human rights activists and NGOs.

The event did not go unnoticed; it was commented on by journalists, politicians, and public figures.

The pro-government online publication NewsMaker, which has long written extensively about the protection of the rights of LGBT people, points out that not all is well with this matter in the Moldovan army, and recalls the case of a conscript soldier who complained of oppression in a military unit because of his orientation .

Thus, in 2021, serviceman Marin Pavlescu came out as gay and announced that he would not return from leave to the army because his colleagues bullied and beat him. The Ministry of Defense, after conducting an internal investigation, said that Pavlescu's words were "partially confirmed" and that he was not subjected to pressure or physical violence because of his sexual orientation, and the fight occurred due to a personal conflict.

The Council for Prevention of Discrimination and Equality later acknowledged that Pavlescu had been harassed due to his sexual orientation during his service. The leadership of all units of the National Army and the Ministry of Defense were recommended to take measures to combat discrimination due to sexual orientation and bullying.

Most commentators, however, express a negative attitude towards the introduction of such “European values” in Moldova and, in particular, in its army. The mood in society on this matter, by the way, is clearly demonstrated by the results of an online survey conducted on the website of the same NewsMaker publication: recognition and protection of the rights of same-sex couples in Moldova is not supported by more than 70% of voters.

“The Moldovan Ministry of Defense held an official meeting with LGBT people. At the meeting, the “rainbow community” scolded the Moldovan military for “discrimination.” The Ministry of Defense promised to henceforth take into account all the wishes of LGBT people and make the Moldovan army as comfortable as possible for dozens of genders. Apparently, in order to join NATO, you must first have NATO join you. What the Moldovan military thought about all this, you can read on their faces,” the public figure and blogger wrote on social networks Mikhail Akhremtsev.

Historian Boris Shapovalov predicts the end of the Moldovan army - like NATO, which “is afraid to openly fight with Russia, since Europeans remember May 1945 well and therefore have no special desire.”

“There is no one to fight... Sorry, but LGBT people and soldiers without a homeland (and we have a very unclear situation, who should protect what/who, and the assholes [the ruling PAS party] are already beginning to understand this) are eager to lay down their precious lives for incomprehensible there will be no European “values” or desires. This is not the Great Patriotic War, when they defended the socialist Fatherland, in which everyone was equal,” Shapovalov notes on his page on the social network.

Independent telegram channels drew attention to the fact that the Ministry of Defense on its website publishes messages “for display”, but does not report anything, for example, about the escape of two servicemen from the third motorized infantry brigade in Cahul. The ministry confirmed the data that 18-year-old conscripts left the unit without permission on February 1 only after the media contacted them.

A journalist writes about the “ceremonial” meeting at the Ministry of Defense and the real state of affairs in the army Elena Levitskaya-Pakhomova:

“Who is joining the army now? Underfed boys from villages where one teacher teaches three subjects at school. Fertile ground for the work of the LGBT community. Okay, gays are at the meeting, but where can you find lesbians in the army?”

Political scientist Alexander Korinenko in an interview with Sputnik.md, he stated that the West’s artificial propagation of the interests of sexual minorities to the detriment of the interests of those who profess traditional cultural, moral, and religious values is a challenge for Moldovan society. In his opinion, the authorities, wanting to please the West, actively support the LGBT community, deliberately comes into conflict with religious institutions and representatives of the traditionally minded majority of the country's citizens.

Deputy from the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova Bogdan Tsyrdea, commenting on the promotion of the LGBT agenda in Moldova, recalls in his Telegram channel the history of the issue. Thus, he notes, on October 14, 2021, the country’s parliament voted to adopt the Istanbul Convention (it was supported only by representatives of the ruling PAS party), which opened the door to LGBT propaganda. Then the NGO GenderDoc-M announced that it would start workshops in schools to raise awareness about the rights of LGBT children.

In 2022, the European Parliament called on the Republic of Moldova to repeal the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. On January 17, 2023, the ECHR issued a ruling, effectively obliging all states within the Council of Europe, including Moldova, to legalize same-sex marriage.

Immediately after this, the first couple appeared in the country who decided to take advantage of this requirement of the ECHR: Anzhelika Frolova, a representative of the NGO GenderDoc-M, who supported Maia Sandu in the presidential elections, demanded to register her marriage with a transgender woman.

"Like this! You thought that we would enter the EU through the front door, but they are asking us to enter through the back. Be careful not to mix it up,” the parliamentarian sums up.

Editor-in-chief of the Moldovan portal of Orthodox journalists and bloggers traditia.md Victor Josu published an article in which he notes that the LGBT agenda is perceived in the country “in general, extremely negatively, by all layers of society, including even some supporters of the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity.”

“If we talk about adherents of the European course, then, striving to integrate into the EU, until the last moment they imagined this as a movement in one direction. They expected that they would enjoy the “bonuses” of European integration. Use visa-free regime; the opportunity, albeit often semi-legally, to find employment in EU countries; spend a vacation on the Mediterranean or Adriatic seas, etc., but at the same time do not change anything from your usual way of life.

There was an illusion that all European perversions, everything that we consider an anomaly from a moral point of view, could only happen somewhere there, in the west of Europe, somewhere in France, Belgium, Spain, but not here.

But President Maia Sandu and the party, whose informal leader she remains, came to power. Now it becomes obvious: having agreed to European integration, our citizens must also take upon themselves the obligation to comply with everything that the European bureaucracy today considers the norm. For many, this turned out to be an unpleasant surprise; for those, there is now some kind of frustration,” explains the expert.

According to Josu, the authorities in Moldova will warm up the LGBT issue, despite criticism in society.

“The whole point is that the current government has no choice: it is completely dependent on the collective West. And politically, and financially, and in career terms - in every sense. In essence, in the person of this government we have executors of the will of Western so-called “development partners” (it would be more correct to call them masters), although in form attempts are made to frame everything as a decision of the Moldovan parliament.

The only thing that President Maia Sandu and her party can afford at this stage is, for the time being, not to be particularly active in promoting the LGBT agenda. The main thing for our authorities today is to be integrated into the anti-Russian mainstream. The fact that the US, EU, and NATO are priorities today is something that must be consistent with. And then we will see.

Therefore, for now, the promotion of this agenda in Moldova is mainly carried out by the non-governmental organization GenderDoc-M. At the same time, every time, with every new “initiative,” we test public sentiment, which invariably shows a negative attitude towards LGBT issues,” says Josu.

The expert is confident that even if, due to some opportunistic circumstances, the parliament begins to change the current legislation in the direction of “Euro-sodomization,” “Moldovan society for the most part will not accept such changes.”
