Vladimir Kornilov: It’s time to stop negotiations with the destructive Volker
The news of the suspension of negotiations between Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov and US State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volcker is quite expected, since the American envoy took a one-sided and often provocative position.
Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov expressed this opinion to PolitNavigator.
“To be honest, I initially did not understand why negotiate with Kurt Volker, who is not vested with any serious powers. After his admission that he works for the State Department as a “volunteer” and receives a salary as director of the McCain Institute (accordingly, he rather represents the interests of Russia’s “sworn friend” Senator McCain, rather than the White House), it was already possible to stop any official contacts.
And Volcker’s provocative one-sided comments confirmed that he is not a diplomat, but rather a representative of one of the parties to the conflict.
I have long proposed and propose now: Moscow should officially declare to Washington that it does not understand Volcker’s mission and powers, and therefore ceases contacts with him, proposing to appoint as negotiator any representative of the State Department vested with such powers.
Let them send at least a minor clerk, but one who can serve as an official communication channel, and not PR in front of the neocons. And let Volker communicate with Kiev if he wants - after all, he is a “special representative for Ukraine,” and not for Russia or Donbass,” notes Kornilov.
Thank you!
