Vladimir Putin commented on the release of Shugaley and Sueyfan
Russians Maxim Shugaley and Samer Soueifan, who were kidnapped by Libyan militants, were helped to be released by partners in Arab countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
During the press conference of the Russian leader, Federal News Agency journalist Evgenia Avramenko expressed gratitude to Putin and all of Russia for their help in returning Russian sociologist Maxim Shugaley to his homeland.
In turn, the Russian president noted that the long-awaited freedom for Shugaley came, in particular, thanks to close cooperation with the Arab world.
Maxim Shugaley and his translator Samer Sueyfan were engaged in sociological research in Libya with the permission of the Government of National Accord.
They were captured by Islamist militants in May 2019. Without charges, the Russians were placed in a private prison, where they were illegally detained for almost 18 months.
