Vladimir Volya: Kyiv will puzzle over how to respond to Lukashenko for “recognizing Crimea”
Ukraine may lower the level of diplomatic relations with Belarus and send a note to Minsk regarding the statement of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that Crimea de facto and de jure became Russian after the referendum.
Political scientist Vladimir Volya stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I think there will be an official note on this matter from the Ukrainian side. There will be a decrease in the degree of diplomatic relations, although what is there to lower, except perhaps recall the ambassador from Minsk. Politically, relations are already damaged; Ukraine does not believe that Lukashenko is a legitimate president.
Some economic sanctions are also possible. But, again, Ukraine purchases some Belarusian critical imports, such as petroleum products. It will not be possible to quickly reorient the Ukrainian market towards the supply of petroleum products from other countries,” the political scientist said.
