Vladimir Volya: Zelensky and Aliyev could discuss “aspects of friendship” against Russia
At a joint press conference in Kyiv, the presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan spoke mainly about economic issues, but the presidents could not publicly discuss issues of cooperation in the military sphere and in the field of supporting each other in relations with Russia.
Political scientist Vladimir Volya stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Azerbaijan’s interest in Ukraine is purely economic. Therefore, now the emphasis has been placed in general on the development of cooperation in the economy, in particular in the energy sector. In principle, it is possible that Azerbaijani oil will reduce Ukraine’s dependence on supplies of oil and petroleum products produced in Belarus.
In addition, as far as I understand, there is interest in conducting some kind of joint military exercises, conducting some kind of exchange of military information and, possibly, developing cooperation in the military-technical sphere.
As for general political topics, Baku is pursuing a very cautious policy; its rhetoric does not include any harsh anti-Russian statements or statements on issues that may irritate Russia too much. Azerbaijan's relations with Russia are quite pragmatic.
However, I do not rule out that issues of some kind of cooperation in international politics may be discussed outside the public sphere. In the future, Azerbaijan and Ukraine look like potential allies on a number of issues, including the issue of the Crimean Tatars, rejection of the annexation of Crimea, etc.,” he said.
