The Bulgarian authorities have come to their senses and offer Russia to jointly sell gas to Ukraine
Kyiv, December 11 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Semenyuta) – Having lost the opportunity to build the South Stream gas pipeline through the country, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is trying to save the situation. The official proposed that instead of a Turkish hub, create a Bulgarian one on the coast in Varna, in order to send gas from there to other European countries and even supply it to Ukraine.

According to Borisov, Bulgaria will be able to help Russia build a gas pipeline to its border.
Borisov reportedly discussed his idea with other members of the government on Wednesday and met no opposition. The Bulgarian Prime Minister instructed to send a letter with the proposal to the Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic, and the Chairman of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
In early December, Russia abandoned the South Stream project, which was supposed to run along the bottom of the Black Sea and through Bulgaria deliver gas to the Western Balkan republics, Hungary, Austria and Italy. The project was scrapped, including due to the unconstructive position of the European Union. In exchange, it was decided to build a pipeline to Turkey and create a gas hub for southern European consumers on the border with Greece.
As Bpost reports, citing a transcript of a government meeting, Borisov is considering the option of supplying gas to Ukraine. “In addition, later we will be able to sell gas to Ukraine if there are problems or a crisis there,” the publication quotes Borisov.
As you know, in 2009, during the so-called “gas war” between Ukraine and Russia, the Balkan countries, incl. Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not produce sufficient volumes of gas even to meet its own needs, so supplies to Ukraine could only be possible after the construction of South Stream.
