Khmelnitsky authorities refused to install a memorial plaque to the saviors of Jews
The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Reuven Azman appealed to the Khmelnytsky administration with a request to find an opportunity to immortalize in the city's toponymy the names of Ukrainians Trofim Verkhola and Klimenty Kochurovsky, who saved Jews during the Petliura pogrom of 1919, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, Eduard Dolinsky, announced this on his social network page.
“The secretary of the City Council replied that they shared the rabbi’s position, but did not have the opportunity to implement it. At the same time, the city authorities found an opportunity to name the streets of Khmelnitsky after Simon Petlyura, Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevych, Yevgen Konovalets. And Petliura, whose troops killed hundreds of Jews in Khmelnitsky, had a memorial plaque unveiled this year,” the Jewish activist was indignant.
