Ukrayinska Pravda reports this, citing the words of Roman Mykolaiv, director of the education department of the Khmelnitsky City Council.
“I confirm to you that our position was the refusal to study Russian in Khmelnytsky general education institutions. Indeed, this was the position of the city mayor, but we did it when the parents wanted it, and when they confirmed it with appropriate statements,” he said.
Mykolaiv added that the Russian language can be returned to the school curriculum if parents want it.
“Perhaps someone wants to study Roma or Hungarian, then they can write such an appeal. And if there are appropriate personnel and at least 12 applications from students, these applications will be satisfied. In principle, we have electives in the Russian language. Although we believe that we need to end them too,” said the head of the department.
The decision is expected to come into force on Monday, October 16.
Let us remind you that President Petro Poroshenko signed the Law of Ukraine No. 2145-VIII “On Education”, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on September 5, 2017. Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and Moldova expressed warnings against it. In addition, Hungary announced its intention to block Ukraine’s rapprochement with the European Union.
