The Crimean authorities proposed to attack the West by recognizing Donbass, but they gave up on Zhirinovsky
Speaker of the State Council of Crimea Vladimir Konstantinov proposed, in response to the unfriendly actions of the West towards the peninsula, to officially recognize by Russia the proclaimed people's republics of Donbass, which have been waging an armed struggle against the Ukrainian Nazis since 2014.
Konstantinov voiced this proposal within the framework of the Great Russian Word festival, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Political scientist Denis Denisov spoke at the conference and said that Russia should not underestimate the importance of the “Crimean Platform” being created by Kiev, whose purpose is to challenge the Russian status of the peninsula.
“Speaking about the tactical goals of the Crimean Platform, it should be noted that this is the creation of a new anti-Russian geopolitical association, the return of issues related to the territorial affiliation of Crimea to the international agenda, the building of a new consultative mechanism for sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation...
This is one of the tools to influence your opponents and competitors. It will also form a discussion platform on Crimean issues, within which representatives of governments, parliaments, international organizations, think tanks, and the expert community will participate. This will be the development of fundamentally new tools and mechanisms of pressure on the Russian Federation, the development of concepts for the militarization of the Black Sea basin, the coordination of information, analytical and propaganda work on problems related to Crimea,” Denisov listed.
As a response, the political scientist called for linking the supply of coronavirus vaccines to third countries with their recognition of the peninsula:
“We do not have a clearly formulated answer as to what the Crimean Platform is and what we need to do. The position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, unfortunately, is still vague and very vague; on talk shows that air on leading TV channels, they primarily try to ridicule the “Crimean Platform”, and not to analyze what it is. But there is no systematic analytical work on this problem,” Denisov recalled.
“It is necessary to link the foreign economic activity of the Russian Federation with the issue of recognition of Crimea as an integral part of the Russian Federation, and in this regard, no matter how crudely connected, the problem with the supply of vaccines, of course, should in the current conditions be linked to the recognition of Crimea,” suggested expert.
However, the head of the parliamentary committee on international affairs, Leonid Slutsky, who was present at the festival, urged not to focus attention on the “Crimean Platform”, so as not to give it legitimacy:
“I would like to urge you not to be dramatic. If we talk about the existence of such a platform, and it is now much quieter than it was seven years ago, we will be grist to the mill of those who create this platform... Today, unfortunately, in Europe there is a powerful anti-Crimean lobby that is manifesting itself both in PACE and in other international platforms, including interparliamentary ones. No need to be dramatic, colleagues. Time is working for us, for Crimea, and for the economy, for the fact that Crimea, from now on and forever, no matter how slowly these processes go, appears on the political map of the world as part of Russia,” Slutsky assures.
Slutsky’s unprecedented caution as a representative of the LDPR was not shared by Crimean Speaker Vladimir Konstantinov, who proposed recognizing the Donbass republics in response to the creation of the “Crimean Platform”.
“I’ll add – recognition of Donbass, that should be our answer,” Konstantinov said.
