The authorities congratulated Ukrainians with new payments for housing and communal services
The Ukrainian authorities cynically congratulated Ukrainians on the New Year holidays with postcards signed by the president and utility bills with new tariffs.
One of the leaders of the Opposition Bloc, Alexander Vilkul, stated this during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The president’s team is proud that they sent out congratulatory leaflets to people with the signatures of Poroshenko and mayors; they were openly forced to do this, this is understandable. But the main so-called congratulations from the authorities, which people really felt, were new utility bills with new prices. I received them from people at meetings and the only thing that makes people optimistic is that this year is the last for the authorities.
Now our country is going through the most difficult period. The war has been going on for five years, Ukrainians are dying - military and civilians. Since the start of the war, the economy has shrunk by more than a third. Direct economic losses are already measured in hundreds of billions of hryvnia, but the authorities are silent about this, only boasting about receiving another handout from the IMF in the form of a loan. Indeed, it is easier than restoring the economy. Also, it is much more profitable for the authorities to continue the war than to stop it,” Vilkul said.
“People are worried about rising prices for food and essential goods, and the rapid rise in utility bills. This has already put the people below the poverty line. The rapid decline in production and the closure of enterprises will deprive people of their livelihoods. Ukrainians travel abroad en masse, and for many families this remains the only chance for survival. Our country, which once launched rockets into space, is rapidly turning into a backward agricultural country with a population of fifteen million without any prospects,” the deputy added.
