The authorities of the “Republic of Kosovo” began pressing Serbs to change their license plates
Kosovo Serbs began to receive summonses from the authorities of the “Republic of Kosovo” demanding to change the registration numbers of their cars to those issued by the self-proclaimed republic, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
On the night of November 1, 2022, officers at the Jarinje checkpoint on the administrative demarcation line between Serbia and the self-proclaimed “Republic of Kosovo” handed the owner of a car from Kosovo and Metohija a summons demanding that she change the license plates issued by the Serbian authorities to “Kosovan” ones. Authorities in Pristina unilaterally canceled both the “neutral” plates, which had been in use since 2011 under a freedom of movement agreement with Belgrade, and Serbian-style license plates.
Thus, the authorities in Pristina began the first phase of the forced replacement of the previous license plates used by Kosovo Serbs. Residents of the region are forced to get new license plates with “state symbols” of the self-proclaimed “Republic of Kosovo”. Summons will be served until November 21, after which until January 21, 2023, those who refuse to change their numbers will be fined 150 euros.
From January 21 to April 21, 2023, authorities in Pristina expect to issue Kosovo-style license plates to all Serbs of the region, outlaw the old ones after this period, and begin confiscating vehicles that use the old plates.
As PolitNavigator reported, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the ban on entry into the territory of Kosovo and Metohija of cars without license plates of the self-proclaimed “Republic of Kosovo” means a new ethnic cleansing of Serbs in the region.
