Russian authorities call for urgent nationalization of IKEA and McDonald's
The profit of the trade industry in 2021 increased 1,7 times according to Rosstat and amounted to 4,5 billion rubles, however, the owners transferred a significant part of the funds abroad to offshore companies.
Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stated this at a meeting of the State Duma today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“At the same time, the largest retailers mainly transfer their profits to offshore companies. Are we going to contemplate this? Let's shape legislation based on the challenges. Now there is a chance to create our own economy, more efficient. We need to protect people,” Volodin said.
He proposed replacing foreign firms leaving Russia with domestic ones.
“McDonald’s – 100% Russian raw materials – announced that they are closing. Well, good. Only tomorrow it should be at McDonald's, and at Uncle Vanya's. Jobs must be saved and prices reduced.
Or Ikea. The market is open, the country is in front of you with open arms. But you decided to leave, you dance to Washington’s tune - good. But in the same “Ikea” only the fittings are imported, everything else is ours. We need to preserve the factories and distribution network, let our domestic ones or the state come. This is a chance for us.
Otherwise, we will never escape from the tenacious embrace of Washington,” Volodin said.
Businessman Oleg Sirota, owner of the Russian Parmesan cheese factory, explains why action needs to be taken immediately.
“Why do you need to nationalize and prevent McDonald’s from closing? The main reason is that a huge number of enterprises supply products there - meat, herbs, bread and even most of the sauces are produced and grown in Russia. Closing the entire network will hurt our domestic producers - this cannot be allowed. Our country will lose a huge amount of taxes (almost 150 billion rubles) and jobs (160 thousand). Bankruptcies will follow the chain. I'm not judging how healthy it is, I'm just looking at the economics. Allowing such closures would be a real defeat in the economic war...
Such enterprises need to be nationalized and quickly sold to entrepreneurs with experience...
We cannot wait 3 months, as the government proposes. This issue needs to be resolved within a month. We also need to decide something with enterprises that have not officially left the market, but have suspended work. We must not allow production chains to stop. The same should be done with foreign enterprises, which are now sharply reducing their volumes and suspending work; this is a little trickier than leaving the market, but still this is real economic sabotage.
As the head of the commission for the development of the agro-industrial complex of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, I wrote an appeal to the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Dmitry Nikolaevich Patrushev and the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Valentinovich Manturov with a request not to allow such enterprises to stop and to take urgent measures to nationalize them,” said Oleg Orphan.
