“They just want tougher punishments. They were charged with relatively minor articles of the Criminal Code: violation of public order, hooliganism, and so on. Now they are charged with simply lethal charges: undermining territorial integrity and terrorism. Collectively, they could receive life imprisonment.
Therefore, it cannot be said that Ukraine has embarked on the path of legal recovery. The actions that Right Sector holds there are further confirmation of this. Unfortunately, we are still very far from winning this lawsuit,” Gasparyan said.
On September 18, the city court of Chernomorsk (formerly Ilyichevsk), Odessa region, acquitted the accused in the case of mass riots on May 2, 2014. There were 19 people in the dock, five of them spent more than three years in the Odessa pre-trial detention center before the court’s decision.
For two of those present, the acquittal was replaced by a new suspicion and immediately, in the courtroom, a new detention on charges of separatism.
Another of those acquitted by the court was hospitalized on the same day - he was attacked on the street by unknown persons and seriously injured.
