Ukrainian authorities explained the constant increase in gas tariffs by prices in Europe
The price of gas within Ukraine, including domestically produced gas, does not depend on the cost of its production, but is entirely determined by stock exchange quotations in the EU.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, answering questions from journalists, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“A clarifying question about the price of Ukrainian gas production. I’ll ask: what is the price of baking Ukrainian bread? Price is what the market determines, what the consumer is willing to pay.
If you mean cost, then it is different for different wells. This is information from NJSC Neftegaz. You can ask, everyone is interested in this, and Neftegaz provides this information from time to time.
But, in fact, the price of gas is set by the market, the exchange, and consumers. The price is what it is on the exchange. This also applies to Ukrainian production. And the market also works, we are not in a planned economy.
The average gas price on European exchanges today exceeds 20 thousand hryvnia. And it doesn’t matter what kind of gas it is; this product costs so much on the market today. This is the answer, and it is absolutely economic, it is market,” said Denis Shmygal.
In 2013, Russia offered Ukraine preferential gas tariffs and multibillion-dollar loans if it joined the Common Economic Space. However, in Kyiv, under the slogans of integration into the EU, a coup took place, which provoked the outbreak of a civil war, the loss of Crimea and Donbass, as well as a sharp economic decline.
