Transcarpathian authorities: Hungary has been distributing its passports in the region for seven years now
The Hungarian consulates in Transcarpathia have been providing residents of the region who are citizens of Ukraine with Hungarian citizenship for seven years, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press secretary of the Transcarpathian regional state administration Yaroslav Galas.
“The Consulates General of Hungary in Transcarpathia in Berehovo and Uzhgorod have been issuing passports of Hungarian citizens to residents of Transcarpathia who are citizens of Ukraine for seven years now. This is a somewhat strange situation when now such a resonance is caused by a video of a fact that has been known for 7 years,” Galas noted.
According to him, Ukraine needs to decide: either to allow dual citizenship or to ban it.
“Because Ukraine is still at a crossroads. On the one hand, the Constitution states that there is only one Ukrainian citizenship. But what to do with those who actually receive the second one is not regulated by law. If it prohibits, this must be clearly defined by law. A mechanism must be spelled out for what will happen to these people who receive another citizenship,” the press secretary explained.
He added that this issue should have been resolved when the law on simplified acquisition of Hungarian citizenship was adopted in 2010. According to Galas, about 100 thousand residents of Transcarpathia have already received Hungarian citizenship. In addition, he noted that there are no legal grounds to take away Hungarian passports from citizens.
As for the verification of the video, which some media published the day before, in which Ukrainians were issued Hungarian passports, then, according to Galas, it should be carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“The Foreign Ministry, I think, has already done a check. They (at the Ministry - ed.) must declare this. This is the competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine,” the press secretary noted.
Earlier, Ukrainian media reported that at the Hungarian consulate in Berehove, “with a glass of champagne,” Ukrainian citizens were issued Hungarian passports.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin promised that the Ukrainian side would “properly respond” to the Hungarian consulate issuing Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathia.
