Süddeutsche Zeitung (Germany):
Ukraine’s actions met with misunderstanding among European authorities. The German government “in an unprecedented form” warned Kyiv against the collapse of the country.
“The continuing trends towards a split in Ukraine are of serious concern,” said German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schäfer.
The Ukrainian authorities, instead of opposing the nationalist organizers of the blockade, decided to completely ban trade with Donbass, Schaefer pointed out. “This widens the gap,” he warned.
Associated Press (USA):
Petro Poroshenko made a “sharp U-turn” by introducing a blockade that he had previously tried to ban. Apparently, this is caused by the vulnerability of the Ukrainian government to radical forces that are increasingly influencing the country’s political course.”
Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Switzerland):
Swiss journalists noted the growing influence of nationalists in Kyiv and noted that Ukraine had identified its priorities incorrectly.
“Kyiv must be careful not to fall into the nationalist channel. <…> The most important thing is to concentrate on your own internal tasks - not to let the reforms stall,” the article says.
New York Times (USA):
Experts from an influential and representative North American publication pointed out the disastrous consequences of the blockade for peace in Ukraine. “The decision to block all trade communications, with the exception of humanitarian ones, dealt a new blow to the already complicated Minsk settlement,” the material notes. The newspaper emphasizes that the success of the “Minsk process” would be the first step to improve relations between Russia and the United States.
Politico (USA):
The traditionally hawkish tabloid pointed out the economic consequences that Ukraine would face due to the severance of trade relations with Russia and Donbass. “Russia is an important trading partner, although its role is declining. Kyiv also risks completely cutting off the Donbass and alienating its population, which will complicate any subsequent reintegration of the region,” the publication writes.
As PolitNavigator reported, the legalized blockade of Donbass formalizes the separation of Ukraine from the LDPR.
