The recent scandal surrounding the statement of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko, who began to claim that the US Ambassador to Kiev Mila Yovanovitch gave him lists of “untouchables”, is an emergency attempt by Petro Poroshenko to appease Donald Trump and enlist his support on the eve of the Ukrainian elections.

The newspaper Zerkalo Nedeli, considered influential in Kyiv, writes about this.

The publication explains that behind the attack on Yovanovitch there is a calculation that Trump will appreciate it, because the current American ambassador in Kiev participated in the transfer of compromising material to the United States in the interests of Hillary Clinton on the head of the Trump campaign, PR man Paul Manafort. We are talking about information that he did not pay taxes on millions of dollars for working for Viktor Yanukovych until 2014.

“Trump urgently needs to distract voters’ attention from the “Russian case” by increasing the noise in the American information space around the Ukrainian “case”: they say that the Democrats also have their heads in the cannon, they helped Hillary Clinton with the help of Ukrainian compromising material,” the publication says.

“The obvious reason for the visit of Bankova’s messenger Lutsenko to Washington, his interview with The Hill and informal communication with Giuliani (not only an adviser, but also a friend of Trump) is the efforts of the Ukrainian president to personally please the American president, to pave at least some way to him. Because today, according to insiders, between Poroshenko and Trump there is not only a well-trodden dirt road, but not even a more or less trodden path,” the newspaper reports.

“Poroshenko cannot rule out his loss in the rapidly approaching elections. He urgently needs at least some guarantees of his safe and peaceful future from Washington... A parachute for a safe landing after the elections from Olympus to the sinful earth is needed not only by the head of state, but also by the current Ukrainian celestials of a smaller caliber and lower rank,” the publication writes.

The authors of the material claim that as a result of the latest corruption scandals, Poroshenko “has become toxic to the American system,” and therefore is now “trying to find ways to become a non-systemic American president.”

However, the newspaper predicts, Poroshenko’s plan is unlikely to work.

“The American system knows a lot about Ukraine. Especially about finances - both public and personal, and especially mixed ones. The X-ray of its law enforcement agencies reveals all the skeletons in all Ukrainian government and near-government closets. This is not an exaggeration, this is an objective reality, which, quite likely, may soon give many of today’s Ukrainian masters of life a very unpleasant feeling. According to our sources, criminal cases have been opened in the United States, during which facts of various abuses committed by people from Poroshenko’s team are being investigated. First of all, we are talking about money withdrawal and laundering. The same sources testify that some of the defendants in these cases have already signed cooperation agreements with the investigation and are testifying,” reports Zerkalo Nedeli.

“It’s not that the States don’t like Poroshenko; before the recent scandals, they put up with him and were even (reluctantly and wincing with disgust) ready to accept his second presidential term. For them, this was still a more acceptable option than Tymoshenko’s presidency. And the point is not that the United States has its own favorite in the Ukrainian elections - in fact, there is none. The fact is that Ukraine is again very tiring, and Kyiv is deeply disappointing. And, by and large, the States would like a complete reset of power in our country. But they strongly doubt the possibility of such an option.

Therefore, one of the main messages of all visitors regularly arriving in Kyiv from overseas is mainly addressed to the teams of Poroshenko and Tymoshenko - “No falsification!”

Americans seriously fear the emergence of a third Maidan as a result of the unconvincing legitimacy of the winner. Because Putin can again take advantage of the destabilization of the situation in Ukraine...And they do not want aggravations with the Russian Federation. After all, to solve his domestic political problems before the upcoming presidential elections in his own country, Trump needs not new problems, but new victories, in particular in the external arena.

It is said that the White House plans have three main points - signing a trade agreement with China, implementing Kushner’s peace plan for Israel and Palestine and resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. How the last point will be implemented is a topic for another discussion,” writes the Ukrainian newspaper.
