He was asked how he sees relations between the United States and Ukraine in the near future and how unshakable American support for Kyiv can be called.

“Ukraine, you know, is now developing a quasi-alliance with the United States. There is no formal alliance, and there is certainly no American commitment to provide military support to Ukraine in the event of a new conflict. And in Kyiv they understand this,” Colton said.

He says Ukraine receives American aid as well as limited supplies of offensive weapons and diplomatic support, creating a kind of status quo supported by Washington.

“But Ukrainians, of course, want more. They want the US to support their bid for NATO membership. They also want to join the EU, where American opinion is less relevant. I think the Ukrainians are very disappointed with the successes in both of these areas. And Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to Washington at the end of August was not a great success, this is quite obvious,” notes the Harvard professor.

In his opinion, Ukraine should be more realistic about the level of support from the United States.

“And admit that NATO membership is practically impossible for them at the moment, because it would require unanimous agreement from the Europeans, and that simply won’t happen. The current uneasy status quo that we talked about will continue. I note that in general, American foreign policy priorities are shifting from Europe to Asia, and the importance of Ukraine on the agenda, I believe, will only decrease,” Colton concluded.

At the same time, as PolitNavigator reported, there is an opinion that the West is not tired from Ukraine, but will continue to use it against Russia.
