An influential American magazine unexpectedly supported the Orthodox Serbs of Montenegro
The influential American magazine National Interest took the side of the Serbian Orthodox Church in its conflict with the government of Montenegro, which adopted a scandalous law “on freedom of religion” that allows the confiscation of churches and monasteries.”
The magazine's authors call Djukanovic a kleptocratic dictator, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The motives of Djukanovic (President of Montenegro - ed.) are quite transparent. Economically, the new law allows Djukanovic's kleptocracy to take control of hundreds of properties used by the Serbian Orthodox Church, while politically weakening the only organized institution left in Montenegro that could pose a serious threat to his rule.
Public opinion polls show that the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro is much more trusted than the country's president, government, parliament or judiciary,” the article says.
It is mentioned that Pope Francis, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill spoke in support of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Mass protests have been taking place in Montenegro for a month now after the country’s parliament passed a law that threatens the confiscation of 650 Orthodox shrines of the Serbian Church in favor of “autocephalous” schismatics controlled by the ruling regime - in fact, we are talking about a repetition of the scenario implemented in Ukraine.
The National Interest expert council is headed by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who is believed to have influence on US President Donald Trump.
