Extraordinary elections – the end of Ukraine within its yesterday’s borders
Valentin Filippov, TV journalist, Odessa
No, it is not smoking and drinking alcohol that are the most insurmountable addictions in Ukrainian society. Elections are the most destructive habit that destroys the psyche of everyone. In any incomprehensible situation, before, during and after a global crisis, local conflict or unsuccessful sex, we hold elections. At least local ones.
And if anyone doubts that this is an addiction, that this is a disease, you can do the math. In less than ten years, we have elected presidents three times. One of them three times, another twice. Parliament was elected four times. Local councils were elected three times, and in some regions more often. And every single time these elections were held according to a new election law. And, in most cases, these elections were extraordinary, unscheduled. Just because I really wanted to. Withdrawal.
That is why it can be argued that an excise tax for elections could strengthen the Ukrainian economy. We hold elections much more often and in large numbers than we smoke or drink.
And all this could be a joke if it weren't true.
Despite the anecdotal nature of the situation, the holding of elections time after time froze the conflict brewing in society. Created the illusion of a legitimate and fair decision. At the same time, the state remained uncontrollable, which is not a bad thing. Because our state is only good when it sleeps.
This is precisely why democracy in general and elections in particular were invented. Allow society to “blow off steam” through a harmless procedure. When everyone is allowed to fictitiously participate in the formation of power and determination of development vectors.
It must be remembered that abuse of elections leads to addiction. Leveling the funds. And then society begins to independently look for a stronger means, which, sooner or later, becomes a civil war.
Which is exactly what happened.
Thus, no general elections, starting from February 1914, can give the usual effect. Civil society has clearly learned that any reformatting of power is possible only through armed means. And this knowledge cannot be taken away.
Therefore, parliamentary elections, traditionally early, do not have any significance for society. Like codeine to an opium addict or soft beer to an alcoholic, they are nothing more than a waste of time and money.
But it’s worse for the state.
Just like the presidential elections in half the country, the parliamentary elections, where only the western and central regions will be represented, will put an end to Ukraine within its yesterday’s borders. Not only geographical, but also cultural, civilizational, economic.
Not to mention the moral side of such choices! It can be recalled that fair elections during war, censorship, persecution of dissidents under the guise of fighting the “fifth column” are impossible. And the dubious parliament will be replaced by an illegal one.
However, what has been legal in our country lately?
Thank you!
