The internal Ukrainian conflict was used by NATO to justify anti-Russian policies
Western European capitals know very well that any referendum in Crimea will show that local residents do not want to be part of Ukraine.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko stated this in an interview with Kommersant.
He criticized NATO’s logic that after Crimea the alliance says that the Russian threat is real, since Moscow allegedly went to redraw its borders by force and now anything can be expected from it.
“For them it all “began with Crimea.” As if there were no bombings of Yugoslavia in 1999 and a coup in Kyiv. And in Crimea, you can hold referendums even every day - the result will be the same as in 2014, and in Western European capitals they know about this, just as they know about the right of peoples to self-determination. Let me emphasize once again: the man-made internal Ukrainian conflict was used by NATO to justify the alliance’s old new anti-Russian policy,” said the Deputy Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
At the same time, he says, former NATO leaders themselves talk about this.
“The former Secretary General of the Alliance, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, admitted at one of the conferences that NATO found itself in a crisis of searching for identity and, if there had been no Ukrainian events, the conflict would have been worth inventing, since now it became clear to everyone in which direction to develop the alliance,” noted Grushko.
