A pro-Russian candidate may win the second round – Committee of Voters of Ukraine
Pro-Russian candidates in the presidential elections in Ukraine include politicians whose theses resemble or coincide with the theses of Russian politicians.
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe” by the General Director of the “Committee of Voters of Ukraine” Alexey Koshel, answering the question why Russia should try to influence the presidential elections in Ukraine if sociologists and experts say that Ukrainians will not elect a pro-Russian candidate in the near future candidate.
“I would not say the words “never”. I think that even in the elections on April 21 [in the second round] a candidate with pro-Russian views can win. That is, I am very careful in using the word “pro-Russian”. I believe that “pro-Russianness” can be considered in accordance with certain categories, say, when public statements or programmatic theses largely coincide or resemble or duplicate the positions of Russian politicians,” Koshel said.
According to him, one of the key markers in determining whether politicians are pro-Russian is the issue of the war in eastern Ukraine.
“So far we see the discussion in the form of general words and general slogans. But I think the chances that a partially pro-Russian candidate will win the election are quite real. This is an energy issue, this is a war issue, this is a language issue, and a number of other issues,” notes the head of the KIU.
