The Bulgarian military prosecutor's office has charged "Russian spies"
Bulgarian military prosecutors today indicted a group of current and retired military personnel on charges of spying for Russia.
This was reported by the AP, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
We're talking about six of detainees in March of this year, Bulgarian citizens were accused of spying for Russia, actions against their country, the EU and NATO. Among them are a former high-ranking official of the Bulgarian Military Intelligence Service, senior officials from the Ministry of Defense and a former military attaché whose duties included monitoring sensitive information.
It was the former employee of the Military Intelligence Service that the prosecution described as the “brain” of the entire “conspiracy.” According to available information, he graduated from the Moscow intelligence school of the GRU and was allegedly instructed by Moscow, upon returning to his homeland, to create an agent network of people who had access to secret documents related to NATO and the European Union.
This man’s wife, who has dual Bulgarian-Russian citizenship, according to the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office, handed over the resident’s reports to the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria.
If convicted, the person faces ten years to life in prison. He has remained in jail since March while the other five have been released on bail pending trial.
