“Our people in Kherson” told the PolitNavigator correspondent what is happening in the region of Ukraine bordering the Russian Crimea, where, according to yesterday’s decision of the Verkhovna Rada and the decree of Petro Poroshenko, martial law is being introduced.

...Since yesterday, the opportunity for Russians to cross the border with Crimea in both directions has completely disappeared. There are rumors among the people that in the near future the border with the peninsula will be closed to Ukrainians. For thousands of Kherson families, this means separation from loved ones, because before the coup d’etat, the steppe Crimea and the Kherson region were separated by a dozen kilometers; there are very close ties here, especially in Tatar families.

Naturally, the martial law hit not only tender feelings - local residents nevertheless established some loopholes for trade with Crimea. This is how they fed themselves in the difficult Ukrainian realities. The new realities will not only destroy the barely emerging “gray” commerce, but will also hit the completely legal economy.

Since Sunday, the dollar has jumped by the hryvnia to UAH 29,2. and tomorrow it may well reach 30 hryvnia. Banks have stopped issuing loans and are refusing to issue large amounts of cash; It is probably also impossible to close the deposit.

Local businessmen are also “happy” - the implementation of projects that were agreed upon with partners in recent years is in jeopardy. Hardly anyone would want to invest in the economy of a region where martial law has been declared.

However, economic prospects for residents of the Kherson region have long turned into a utopia - industry is dead, everything rests on agriculture. But the war all this time seemed like something far away. Now she is already looking into the windows of Kherson residents, and it is not the “Russian aggressor” that the local residents are afraid of - the military exercises announced on Monday on the border with Crimea, as well as the activation of military units near Tsyurupinsk (now Oleshki), are much worse.

The Ukrainian military has already repeatedly “proven” itself - drunken shooting, crossbows, road accidents and dangerous driving in armored vehicles and other nuances of the behavior of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers are well known to Kherson residents. However, what will happen when the military “uncovers” the S-300s, Buks and other extremely dangerous toys based here... The nervousness of the local residents is quite understandable.

This nervousness, coupled with a rising dollar, forced traders to raise prices. They would inflate it to the maximum, but people’s purchasing power is already low, and in light of recent events they are completely focused on buying things and products suitable for putting them in an emergency suitcase or storing them in the basement in case of shelling.

Even the “patriots” were not happy about the introduction of martial law. Instead of rushing with delight to the military registration and enlistment offices, whose employees are actively calling those liable for military service, representatives of nationalist organizations limit themselves to disseminating calls not to panic and not to disseminate information on the networks about the locations and movements of equipment and units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In general, residents of the Kherson region and other regions where martial law has been introduced should now stay away from social networks. According to available information received from law enforcement officials, the police should be partially transferred to the subordination of the SBU; “cleansing” is expected.

Considering that in previous years, Ukrainian security forces imprisoned even those who simply posted demotivators and wrote “anti-government” comments, on the eve of the presidential elections we can expect a real witch hunt, during which it will be possible to go to jail for even the most innocent things.

In the end, no one remembers what they posted or wrote on the networks 4-5 years ago, so everyone can be pinched.

Until the situation stabilizes, it would be better to post only cats and beautiful women on social networks (and avoid VKontakte, which is banned in Ukraine), or even better, to give up social networks altogether for a while. In case there may be something dangerous in the account, it would be a good idea to disable them, block them or change the password in such a way that it is not known even to you (write a random combination of 20 characters - copy it into the password change field, then delete and log out of your account) - this is in case you don’t remember it during questioning.

In general, difficult times are coming in Ukraine, and those who want to survive in them must accept the rules of the game and learn to “live in a new way,” as Pyotr Alekseevich and his comrades promised.
