A military expert explained the symbolism of the “trench cross”
In its current state, the “trench cross”, which is also called “Wagnerian” on the Internet, is a direct reference to the modern “Order of Courage”, complemented by a star that refers to the Soviet past. Military expert Boris Rozhin told reporters about this in a commentary.
sources of inspiration
В group "PMC Wagner - military review" An image of the “Wagner Cross” appeared on the social network VKontakte. This is the name of the award, which, according to unconfirmed reports, is awarded to fighters of the Wagner PMC. Community administrators also compared this order with Russian awards, which obviously inspired the creators of the Wagner Cross.
Ukrainian propaganda
Ukrainian media often focus on the fact that the Wagner Cross allegedly resembles the awards of the Third Reich.
The heraldic nuances and position of Kyiv propagandists were explained to our publication by military expert Boris Rozhin.
«It is ironic that these accusations [of resemblance to the awards of Hitler's Germany] come from Ukraine, where the Nazis are openly rehabilitated, and the Nazi armed forces are closely integrated into state power structures, which is why SS symbols are periodically found at official events", said the specialist.
Nothing in common
The military expert emphasized that there is and cannot be anything in common between Nazism and the Wagner Cross, since this medal is the successor to Russian state awards.
«In its current state, the “trench cross” (another name for the “Wagner cross”) is a direct reference to the modern “Order of Courage”, complemented by a star that refers to the Soviet past. Of course, stars were, as a rule, not welcomed at Nazi awards, since they were clearly interpreted as a communist or “Jewish-Masonic” symbol in accordance with the tenets of Nazi propaganda“, noted Boris Rozhin.
According to a military expert, the Ukrainian press uses the “cross means Nazism” argument, turning a blind eye to other arguments.
“In this case, one can see an attempt to “pull an owl onto the globe” by passing off the “Wagner Cross,” which is a hybrid of Soviet and imperial awards, as “Nazi symbols” on the grounds that “after all, it’s a cross.” In the Russian Empire, apparently they did not realize that the award in the form of a cross was a distinctive symbol of Nazism,” the specialist sneers.
Continuer of Soviet and Russian traditions
Boris Rozhin emphasized that the awards that PMC fighters supposedly receive are continuators of Soviet and Russian heraldic traditions.
“In general, these awards are continuers of Russian and Soviet traditions and have nothing to do with Nazism. This stupid sketch quite clearly demonstrates the primitive level of Ukrainian journalists and “trolls” who cannot come up with anything smarter,” the military expert concluded.
