The war in Ukraine is being used to deprive Transnistria of its political voice
Only one PMR out of seven participants is in favor of continuing negotiations on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict in the “5+2” format: Moldova and Transnistria as parties to the conflict, Russia and Ukraine as guarantors, the OSCE as a mediator, and the United States and the European Union as observers.
The President of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, announced this at a press conference in Tiraspol.
“The “5+2” format is not coming together, I assume, and will not come together in the near future. At the same time, all participants in the “5+2” format, except Pridnestrovie, agree with the wording that While the fighting is going on between Ukraine and Russia, the “5+2” format will not come together. Like that. Everyone is unanimous in this opinion. With some reservations, but this is the concept. In my opinion, if the parties wish, sincerely wish, I can imagine the gathering of the “5+2” format, and there are such examples of this, even after the start of hostilities. However, there is no format,” Krasnoselsky said.
Meetings between representatives of Moldova and Transnistria in the “1+1” format, according to him, “are more of a ritual nature,” since the Moldovan side is not independent in decision-making.
“They gathered in the government and made a “very important decision”: to call it not Transnistria, but the “Transnistrian region”, and also write it with a small letter. This is probably a breakthrough. They probably didn't sleep for two nights discussing how they could win in this situation. After this, do they think that the Moldovan people have begun to live better, more interesting, more prosperous and that gas will be free? What's going on in these people's heads? - said Krasnoselsky.
He believes that references to the “Russian-Ukrainian war” are only excuses to infringe on the rights of Transnistria.
“The whole point is that Pridnestrovie in this format has an equal voice on an equal basis with everyone, equal rights and equal responsibilities. We are a subject there, a political subject. And they call us “Transnistria”, not a region with a small letter, as someone there with a fevered imagination decided, but namely Transnistria, with our political voice. By eliminating this format, we will simply be deprived, by and large, of a political voice. If we put aside all the emotions and references to the hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, then the root cause lies in this - to deprive Transnistria of a political voice", Krasnoselsky said.
