Volker will not bring happiness to Ukraine
Ukraine is no longer a priority for the United States, and for State Department Special Representative Kurt Volcker, the upcoming visit to Kyiv is important for career reasons.
Political analyst Denis Gaevsky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I wouldn’t expect any breakthroughs. The visit is much more important for Volcker himself in terms of career prospects. As we see, he managed to gain a foothold in the State Department under the new leader Pompeo. Today there was news that his mandate has been expanded and extends not only to the issue of settlement in Donbass, but also to the situation in Ukraine as a whole,” the expert said.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that if in 2014–2016 Vice President Biden was responsible for Ukraine, today it is only the State Department clerk Volker.
“It is quite obvious that Ukraine is on the periphery of US foreign policy along with the Baltic states. And apart from American-Russian relations, Ukraine in itself is not interesting and attractive for the United States,” Gaevsky concluded.
