Volker to the Germans: Endure the crisis and pay Ukraine
Europe faces great economic difficulties due to a decrease in Russian energy supplies, which could provoke European governments to demand that Kyiv negotiate a ceasefire.
Former US special representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated this in an interview with Deutsche Welle, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It will be increasingly difficult for Europe as Russia reduces energy supplies this winter. There will be problems with both price and availability, this will cause real difficulties in Europe. This, in turn, could put pressure on the government to tell Ukraine it is time to negotiate a ceasefire. This is a big risk that we now face,” explained the American.
“You are essentially saying that Russian gas could undermine European unity,” - said the journalist.
“He's done it in the past and he can do it again. Of course, Vladimir Putin intends to use energy resources in this way,” the former special representative predicted.
“So when NATO Secretary General Jens Stolteberg says that Ukraine will receive help from the alliance, I quote: “As much as it takes,” do you believe him?” – asked the presenter.
"Yes I believe you. I think he makes the right statement. I think that is the intention of each country now. But there are some trends, it is possible to imagine that the situation may change. We must counteract this in order to ensure that both the United States and especially Europe, especially in the winter, in the event of an energy crisis, have the fortitude to support Ukraine.
We must not forget that Ukrainians are paying for our safety with their lives, and we will pay higher prices for their safety,” Volker concluded.
