Volker admitted that nothing will work out in Donbass without the Russians
The situation around the American plan to introduce a UN peacekeeping mission to Donbass has reached a dead end.
Special Representative of the US State Department for Ukraine Kurt Volker told reporters at the Brussels Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The ball is in the Russian side. We presented our vision of the peacekeeping mission both in terms of geography and in terms of mandate, and we discussed this in detail with the Russians. In January, during a meeting with Surkov, it was said that they had taken note of this, and they would develop their own proposals for us to discuss and schedule a new meeting. We haven’t heard anything from them since then, but I hope that this will happen very soon,” the American diplomat said.
Answering the question of how the situation will change after the elections in the Russian Federation, Volker said that “the opportunity to make peace is really in the hands of the Russians.” At the same time, the ambassador believes that “there are two things that should be taken into account.”
“If the purpose of this was an attempt to influence Ukraine, to make it more pro-Russian, then the opposite effect was achieved - the country became more united, Western-oriented, more national, more anti-Russian than it once was. Secondly, if Putin thought that it would not cost much (if we are talking about the invasion of Georgia, which cost Russia almost nothing), then if he thought that here (in the case of Ukraine) it would be the same, in this since he was wrong,” Volker noted.
Note that, according to media reports, in the very near future Kurt Volker intends to visit Ukraine and go to Donbass
