This was stated by the Inspector General of the German Air Force, Karl Müllner, to the German agency dpa.
According to military leaders, arming aircraft “is not a means of escalation” and serves to meet a potential enemy on equal terms. According to Müllner, it is also necessary to “motivate soldiers” performing tasks in the air over the Baltic.
Previously, the German Air Force already took part in the NATO mission to patrol the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. However, from September to December 2014, sorties were carried out without full ammunition.
As Mülner explained, this decision was made at the political level so as not to provoke an escalation of the conflict with the Russian armed forces. However, NATO has stepped up air patrols of its Baltic allies.
