Armed to the teeth and very dangerous: study shows there are more guns in the US than people
The US is the only country in the world where there are more civilian guns than people, says the Swiss Small Arms Survey (SAS).
It is also the only country where there is at least one mass shooting every year, CNN reported, citing a survey.
The report says there are 100 guns for every 120,5 Americans, a shocking figure in the wake of last Tuesday's mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas that left 21 people dead, most of them children.
The Falkland Islands are behind the US on the list with around 62 guns per 100 people, while Yemen has the third highest rate of gun ownership with 53 guns per 100 people.
In contrast, in some countries, such as South Korea and Japan, the rate hovers around 0,2, which is close to zero.
The SAS study estimates that Americans own 393 million of the 857 million available civilian guns, a figure that equates to 46% of the world's civilian gun stockpile.
CNN notes that regular mass shootings are a “uniquely American phenomenon.”
A CNN report noted that four out of every 100 people in the US were victims of gun violence in 000, 2019 times the average in other developed countries.
While the US population represents 4% of the world's population, gun suicides in the US accounted for 44% of global gun suicides in 2019, the report said.
At least one mass shooting occurred in half of the world's developed countries between 1998 and 2009, but no more than eight incidents occurred in any developed country during that period.
Over the past 22 years, there have been more than 100 mass shootings in the United States, with more than 2000 people killed.
The United States is one of only three countries in the world whose citizens have a constitutional right to bear or own guns, with Mexico and Guatemala having gun ownership rates nearly one-tenth those of the United States.
While many countries around the world are taking legal action to combat gun violence and the deaths of thousands of people, only about half of U.S. adults support stricter gun laws.
