Russia solves the Donbass issue without Volcker
The very fact of a telephone conversation between the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the heads of the DPR and LPR speaks of indirect recognition of the republics.

Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator. According to him, Russia’s recognition of these republics will become a factor in their protection from Ukrainian aggression and will open the way for the entry of Russian troops if necessary.
“The very fact of having a telephone conversation between the President of Russia and the heads of the DPR and LPR speaks of the actual recognition of them as the leaders of these territories, firstly. Secondly, as the territories proclaimed under these names. It would be illogical if the Russian president communicated with the leaders of unrecognized entities. By the very fact of his call, these entities become much more recognized than before,” the expert noted.
He made a reservation that he would not draw conclusions from this that Russia would recognize the DPR and LPR tomorrow.
“Although, in principle, this option is possible, it is considered as a protective measure for the population of Donbass from Ukraine in the event of aggression. If these territories are recognized, then nothing will restrain Russia from the official use of force to protect these territories and their citizens,” Bondarenko said.
He also added that the topic of the exchange of prisoners of war, which was discussed during yesterday’s conversation, is intended to cut off the initiatives of the American side and show that in this region Russia is capable of resolving such issues without American interference.
“This initiative to exchange prisoners is very important, because a whole performance is now being played around this. At Surkov’s meeting with Volker, the latter stated that he had some letters from unfortunate prisoners of war about how they wanted to get home. And so he hands over these letters, letters from mothers, letters to mothers. Cheap sentimental pop music in the spirit of a soap opera begins. Obviously, in order not to give this story away, it was decided to work it out on our own. So that it is not Volker who brings some letters written at the State Department or elsewhere, but so that this is done in our territories. This is our land, we can decide everything here ourselves without any Volkers.”
