Deputy Director of the Center for Current Political Affairs Oleg Ignatov stated this today at a press conference in Moscow.
“The time factor is key. We have time until September-October 2018, until the election process begins in Ukraine and the LDPR, to agree on the prospects for the UN mission and the possibility of reintegrating Donbass,” Ignatov said.
He believes that in the fall, after the start of election campaigns, all issues related to Donbass will become political for Ukraine.
“We saw what happened in Ukraine when Kyiv extended the law on special status. Once the campaign starts, it will be extremely difficult to renew it again. And if it is not extended, the republics will have no incentive to continue the political negotiation process. Russia links the issue of the UN mission with Kiev’s fulfillment of political obligations, and Kyiv cannot give any obligations for 2019,” Ignatov said.
