Ukraine's negotiations with the United States concern not so much lethal weapons as various military equipment. President Petro Poroshenko said this today during a joint statement with US Secretary of Defense James Mettis after the parade in honor of Ukraine's Independence Day.

“We actually agreed during my visit that we would have a very active dialogue on ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This concerns not only and not so much the supply of lethal weapons, but the increase in defense capabilities, including electronic warfare equipment and other means,” Poroshenko said.

At the same time, he hinted that negotiations were underway about something more.

“Discussing these issues before making a major decision requires silence. Today I would not like to comment on these issues, but I can say that I, as the President of Ukraine, am pleased with their discussion. We see an absolutely clear position of our strategic partner,” Poroshenko said.

For its part, Metis also did not make specific promises.

“I came here to better understand the situation facing your frontline soldiers. This will give me the opportunity to more actively advocate for what your President and Secretary of Defense have brought to my attention. If we talk about defensive and lethal weapons, we are considering this issue. “I will return now and, based on what I have seen and learned, I will inform the country’s leadership about very specific things that I will recommend for implementation,” said the US Secretary of Defense.

Asked whether the supply of, for example, Javelin systems would provoke Russia to “further aggression,” Mattis replied:

“Defensive weapons cannot provoke anyone except the aggressor. Ukraine is fighting on its own territory. As for my negotiations, they are confidential. I would like to refrain from commenting,” the minister said.
