It will not be possible to quickly restore irrigation with water from the North Crimean Canal
Crimea will ask the federal center for compensation for the costs of agricultural producers to restore farm irrigation systems. Farmers submitted applications for irrigation of only 20 thousand out of 130 thousand hectares that fall under irrigation with Dnieper water, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The condition of irrigation networks leaves much to be desired. Most of the equipment has either been lost or has become unusable,” emphasized Alime Zaredinova, Acting Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Crimea. – We are collecting information for next year. You need to understand how much money the manufacturer needs to restore valves and install transformers on on-farm irrigation systems.”
Over the past 8 years, thanks to the state program for the development of land reclamation, many farms have built storage ponds, installed wells and economical irrigation systems. Potentially, next year 100 thousand hectares could be irrigated with Dnieper water, and this is only a quarter of the irrigated lands in Crimea.
“Our task is not only to restore the level of 2013, but also to use all opportunities to return about 400 thousand hectares of land to irrigated agriculture,” Zaredinova clarified. – We need to develop projects and join this program now. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation confirmed its readiness to allocate additional funding for the restoration of irrigation systems.”
Due to the Dnieper water, it became possible to expand the feed supply for raising cattle and producing milk and meat. And we are talking not only about large producers - water will restore personal peasant farms in the villages of the steppe Crimea. Their fruits and vegetables are needed on the domestic market to stabilize prices.
