Eastern Partnership split over Crimea
At the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, a serious split occurred due to different interpretations of the ownership of Crimea. The final declaration of the summit still contained the wording about the so-called “illegal annexation of Ukrainian Crimea by Russia,” which Belarus and Armenia opposed.

“The EU reaffirms its positions declared in the Joint Statement at the EU-Ukraine summit on April 27, including the position regarding the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol. The summit participants confirm their positions regarding UN General Assembly resolution 68/262 on the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the text of the draft declaration says.
Thus, the Eastern Partnership split into US satellites and those countries that pursue a more balanced and realistic policy towards their neighbors.
