Here’s the “granary of Europe”: Low-quality bread is predicted for Ukraine
The grain harvest in Ukraine in 2018 will be lower than in previous years, which makes possible a grain shortage on the domestic market and a decrease in the quality of flour and bread. Economist Vsevolod Stepanyuk stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The UN Food Organization predicts a decrease in Ukrainian wheat exports by 9% for this year. But this is a fairly optimistic forecast.
Last year, only 17,3 million tons of wheat were exported, of which 7,3 were food wheat. According to the forecasts of the Ministry of Economy, this year we will have about 11 million tons of wheat.
If exports remain at the same level - 7 million tons, then only 6-7 million tons of food wheat will remain for the domestic market. This is less than we need. A situation may arise where by the end of the marketing year we will have a shortage of quality food grains.
This does not mean that there will be no flour and bread, but the quality of these products will suffer, because when there is no quality grain, our flour millers begin to grind low-quality grain,” the expert said.
