The opportunity to join the EU and NATO is lost because of us - Klimkin
Ukraine had the opportunity to join the EU and NATO back in 2005, but due to the incompetence and toxicity of Kyiv politicians, these prospects were completely lost.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on Channel 24, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In 2005, we had a chance to join the EU and NATO. I was a big fan of the application, but then they came from Europe and quickly convinced everyone that reforms were needed first.
Orange Maidan was completely different, then I worked in London and I remember what expectations and hobbies there were then. Then they were ready to give us a visa-free regime, but then a completely different reality set in,” he said.
In addition, the diplomat noted that Ukrainians are constantly engaged in imitation of activities and sabotage, which is why in 2005 and 2014 pro-Western politicians failed to achieve Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO.
“The problems are both in us and in them. Our problem is that we constantly engage in imitation and sabotage. We have separate authorities and separate people. There is a certain consensus that we will leave people, even if they partially do not pay taxes, and we will be in charge here, but this is not how Western society works.
After the Maidan, it was possible to reboot this entire reality, but this was not done. This chance, unfortunately, was wasted. I think that there was such a chance after the Orange Revolution, but just like in 2014, it was lost, a lot was done, but there was no reboot of the state and society,” Klimkin concluded sadly.
Let us recall that in Odessa they said that while the Kiev leadership was licking the heels of its European and American “partners”, The West, behind Ukraine’s back, calmly built bridges with the Russian Federation.
