Today at the meeting, losses among the civilian population during the Great Patriotic War were announced - 219 thousand people were killed and tortured in concentration camps, another 85 thousand were taken to forced labor in Germany. Taking into account the population of 800 thousand, almost a third of the population was destroyed during the years of occupation.

“This is very important in light of the war crimes of the occupiers against civilians - the population of the Soviet Union,” said Andrei Malgin, director of the Central Museum of Taurida. – The Second World War is different in that more civilians who did not participate in the fighting died than military personnel. The peculiarity of this war is that it bore the features of genocide. If in the First World War we know about the genocide of the Armenian people, then in the Second World War the ideology and practice of Nazism about the destruction of entire racial groups was included in this matter.”

During an open court hearing, the prosecutor and a representative of the interested party supported the demands to recognize the crimes of the fascists on the territory of Crimea against civilians, prisoners and military personnel as crimes against humanity and genocide of various ethnic groups inhabiting the peninsula in those years.

At the stage of researching the evidence, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Crimean Federal University named after A. IN AND. Vernadsky Oleg Romanko, corresponding member of the Academy of Military Historical Sciences of the Russian Federation Sergei Tkachenko, Ph.D., historian-ethnographer Mikhail Kizilov, historian Oksana Sheremet.

The court hearing was adjourned until June 30. Witnesses have been invited to testify at the next meeting.
