“I do not believe that after the crimes that were committed against the residents of Donbass, it is expedient, morally and psychologically possible for it to remain part of Ukraine, even in the freest, confederal status.

There is a precedent in international practice for independence in connection with a case of genocide. Let's say that NATO and Western countries applied this case to Kosovo (although the genocide there was fictitious). South Sudan, where genocide actually took place, gained independence.

From my point of view, Donbass should be considered as a territory that experienced genocide, and therefore has the full right to independence,” Kholmogorov said.
