Russia's return to PACE has brought down the image of Russophobic countries
After the return of the Russian delegation to PACE, the ambition of traditionally anti-Russian countries noticeably subsided. In fact, the aggressive rhetoric is focused on irreconcilable Ukraine and Georgia.
This was stated during the conference by First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy Sergei Kalashnikov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I was present at that May meeting in 2014, where we were expelled, the emotional feeling of hatred from everyone absolutely left an extremely difficult impression. But today, when we were in Strasbourg, the most vivid impression was the emotional disposition of the PACE members. Not all, of course, but most people felt a positive attitude towards Russia and our delegation...
And until 2014, there was a small set of countries, primarily the Scandinavian, Baltic countries, Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, which constantly showed an unfriendly attitude towards Russia and the Russian delegation. Their behavior is traditional, I would say this: not for the first hundred years,” the senator said.
“But I believe that our entry and meeting in PACE greatly damaged the image of these countries. For example, the Scandinavian deputies did not show themselves in any way aggressively at this PACE meeting. Poland and the Baltic countries mostly spoke negatively; Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were no longer heard much. Well, Georgia and Ukraine, our sister republics, are always in their current role,” Kalashnikov noted.
At the same time, according to him, it was clear not only to the Russian delegation, but also to all deputies of the Assembly that the most aggressive representatives of Georgia and Ukraine were deputies solving their own internal problems.
“The tense situation in Georgia, which has nothing to do with us, although Russia served as some kind of trigger, completely artificial - they are now in a struggle for power, and witnessing the mainstream politics of hatred towards Russia is their sacred cause.
There is nothing to say about Ukrainian deputies at all: they have elections in three weeks. Everything that they said at PACE, and they said a lot and very badly about Russia, was all for domestic Ukrainian consumption,” summed up Sergei Kalashnikov.
