Putin's enemy calls on Kyiv not to make a tragic mistake in Donbass
Until the regime changes in Russia, it is extremely dangerous for any Ukrainian president to attempt to return Donbass, and even more so Crimea.
A former adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, and now a fierce critic of Putin and the Kremlin, Andrei Illarionov, who emigrated to the United States, said this on the air of the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, Ukraine should now focus on strengthening its defense capabilities, and not establishing sovereignty over lost territories. And wait for the government to change in Russia.
“Achieving peace in the short or medium term is possible, but this will not be achieved as a result of negotiations, but as a result of ensuring an appropriate military level of protection of the current territory of Ukraine, the development of an appropriate level of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, relevant services, and the economic potential of the state.
This is ensuring peace, this is not yet ensuring sovereignty. In a reasonable short-to-medium term, this is possible, if Ukraine, for example, follows the path of post-war West Germany, it will ensure this peace.
If there is another task - the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty over all occupied territories, then this task, in my opinion, now needs to be postponed until a more convenient time.
And constantly promising anyone, especially the previous, current, or tomorrow Ukrainian president that I will solve this problem, making such statements is a mistake. This is impossible today,” Illarionov said.
“This can be achieved when the geopolitical situation in the world changes, the balance of forces changes, and when there is a person in Moscow, in the Kremlin, there are people who understand what international law is, what respect for international law is, what maintaining normal relations means with all the neighbors, then we can return to this.
Until this happens, it is pointless and erroneous to set such tasks for the Ukrainian authorities,” Illarionov warned.
